Building on Lightning
Lightning is a bitcoin payment network with hundreds of monthly developers. Why people still ship on it, and why Outsat is Lightning-only.
Lightning is not a new L1. It has been moving bitcoin since 2018. What is new is that people are still building on it — wallets, merchants, games, and boards like this one — while a lot of other crypto ecosystems flattened.
Outsat is one of those builds. A sit is a Lightning invoice. It clears, you rank. That only works if the rail is cheap, instant, and public. Lightning is.
The builder count
Electric Capital's developer report tracks public GitHub work tagged to Lightning. As of August 2026 they show:
- 252 full-time developers
- 610 monthly active developers
- 2.3k repos
- 1.2M commits
Monthly actives were near zero in 2016. The line climbs through 2018, keeps climbing after 2021, and sits a bit over 610 now. Multi-chain developers (people who also commit elsewhere) recently passed the Lightning-only group. The work is not a ghost town, and it is not a 2021 meme spike that died.
Those numbers are Electric Capital's, from public repos. They are not our traffic. They are the reason a 1,000-sat invoice is a normal thing to ask for in 2026, not a science project.
Why builders pick it
Bitcoin on-chain is the vault. A thousand-sat sit on-chain is silly — fees can eat it, blocks take minutes.
Lightning is the street:
- Instant. The invoice settles in seconds.
- Cheap. Fees are usually a fraction of a sat.
- Final. No chargeback desk.
- Still bitcoin. Same unit. Just faster. What are sats?
That is why wallets (Phoenix, Zeus, Wallet of Satoshi, Cash App, Strike) can pay a QR and be done. Wallets.
What people actually ship
The report counts commits. The useful stuff is products:
- Wallets that pay and receive invoices
- Exchanges that send Lightning
- Merchant checkout
- Games and leaderboards that treat a payment as the action
Outsat is the last bucket. Pay to rank a host. No account. The invoice is the sit. If Lightning were still a whitepaper, this site would be a form that says "coming soon."
Why this board is Lightning-only
Dollars and cards belong on a different product. Outbid is that cousin. Ads rent a feed. Outsat vs ads.
Here the score is sats, because the rail is bitcoin. A sit that "pending"s for three days is not a sit. Lightning is how a 1,000-sat step stays a 1,000-sat step.
